MOBILITY Wheels and tires198Tire identification marksKnowledge of the labeling on the side of the tire makes it easier to identi fy and choose the right tires.Tire sizeSpeed letterQ = up to 100 mph/160 km/hT = up to 118 mph/190 km/hH = up to 131 mph/210 km/hV = up to 150 mph/240 km/hW = up to 167 mph/270 km/hY = up to 186 mph/300 km/hTire Identification NumberTires with DOT codes meet the guidelines of the US Department of Transportation.DOT code:Uniform Tire Quality GradingQuality grades can be found where applicable on the tire sidewall between tread shoulder and maximum section width. For example:Tread wear 200 Traction AA Temperature ADOT Quality GradesTread wear Traction AA A B C Temperature A B CAll passenger car tires must conform to Federal Safety Requirements in addition to these grades.<Tread wearThe tread wear grade is a comparative rating based on the wear rate of the tire when tested under controlled conditions on a specified gov-ernment test course. For example, a tire graded 150 would wear one and one-half (1g ) times as well on the government course as a tire graded 100. The relative performance of tires depends upon the actual conditio ns of their use, how-ever, and may depart significantly from the norm due to variations in driving habits, service practices and differences in road characteristics and climate.TractionThe traction grades, from highest to lowest, are AA, A, B, and C. Those grades represent the tire's ability to stop on wet pavement, as measured under con-trolled conditions on specified government test surfaces of asphalt and concrete. A tire marked C may have poor traction performance. The traction grade assigned to this tire is based on straight-ahead braking traction tests, and does not incl ude acceleration, corner-ing, hydroplaning, or pe ak traction characteris-tics. <TemperatureThe temperature grades are A, the highest, B, and C, representing the tire's resistance to the generation of heat and its ability to dissipate heat when tested under controlled conditions on a specified indoor labo ratory test wheel. Sus-tained high temperature can cause the material of the tire to degenerate and reduce tire life, and excessive temperature can lead to sudden tire e.g.Nominal width in mmAspect ratio in X Radial belt constructionRim diameter in inchesLoad rating,(not on ZR tires)Speed code letter, (before the R on ZR tires)225/45 R 17 91 VFor instance:Manufacturer's codefor tire maketire size andtire designTire ageDOT xxxx xxx 0212
