581-3. Adjustable components (s eats, mirrors, steering wheel)Pre-collision seat belts (front seats of vehicles with pre-collision system)When the pre-collision sensor detects an obstacle and determines that acollision is unavoidable, the seat belt s lessen collision injury by retractingthe slack in the front seat belts befo re the collision, thus restraining thedriver and passenger at an earlier stage. The seat belts will also operate in the event of sudden braking. ( →P. 192)nEmergency locking retractor (ELR)The retractor will lock the belt during a sudd en stop or on impact. It may also lock ifyou lean forward too quickly. A slow, easy motion will allow the belt to extend so thatyou can move around fully.nAutomatic locking retractor (ALR)When a passenger's shoulder belt is completely extended and then retracted evenslightly, the belt is locked in that position and cannot be extended. This feature isused to hold the child restraint system (CRS) firmly. To free the belt again, fullyretract the belt and then pull the belt out once more. ( →P. 104)nPregnant womenObtain medical advice and wear the seat beltin the proper way. (→P. 56)Women who are pregnant should positionthe lap belt as low as possible over the hips inthe same manner as other occupants. Extendthe shoulder belt completely over the shoul-der and position the belt across the chest.Avoid belt contact over the rounding of theabdominal area.If the seat belt is not worn properly, not only apregnant woman, but also the fetus could suf-fer death or serious injury as a result of sud-den braking or a collision.
