Steps to take in an emergencyIf the vehicle becomes stuckCAUTIONnWhen attempting to free a stuck vehicleIf you choose to rock the vehicle back and forth to free it, make sure the surround-ing area is clear, to avoid striking other vehicles, objects or persons. The vehiclemay also lunge forward or lunge back suddenly as it becomes free. Use extremecaution.nWhen shifting the shift leverWith automatic transmission vehicles, be ca reful not to shift the shift lever with theaccelerator pedal depressed.This may lead to unexpected rapid acceleration of the vehicle that may cause anaccident and result in death or serious injury.NOTICEnTo avoid damaging the transmission and other componentslAvoid spinning the wheels and do not rev the engine.lIf the vehicle remains stuck after trying these procedures, the vehicle may requiretowing to be freed.Carry out the following procedures if the tires spin or the vehicle becomesstuck in mud, dirt, or snow.l Stop the engine. Set the parking brake and put the selector leverin P (vehicles with an automatic transmission) or N (vehicles witha manual transmission).l Remove the mud, snow, or sand from around the stuck tire.l Place wood, stones or some other material to help provide trac-tion under the tires.l Restart the engine.l For 2WD vehicles only: Turn the traction control OFF. ( → P. 141)l Carefully apply the accelerator to free the vehicle.
