2-23CAUTION:It is dangerous to get out of your vehicle if theshift lever is not fully in PARK (P) with theparking brake firmly set. Your vehicle can roll.Don't leave your vehicle when the engine isrunning unless you have to. If you have left theengine running, the vehicle can move suddenly.You or others could be injured. To be sure yourvehicle won't move, even when you're on fairlylevel ground, always set your parking brake andmove the shift lever to PARK (P).If you have four -wheel drive, your vehicle will befree to roll -- even if your shift lever is inPARK (P) -- if your transfer case is inNEUTRAL. So, be sure the transfer case is in adrive gear -- not in NEUTRAL. See "Four -WheelDrive (Automatic Transfer Case)" in the Index.See "Shifting Into PARK (P)" in the Index. Ifyou're pulling a trailer, see "Towing a Trailer" inthe Index.Ensure the shift lever is fully in PARK (P) beforestarting the engine. Your vehicle has an automatictransmission shift lock control system. You have to fullyapply the regular brakes before you can shift fromPARK (P) when the ignition key is in RUN. If youcannot shift out of PARK (P), ease pressure on the shiftlever -- press the button on the shift lever and push theshift lever all the way into PARK (P) as you maintainbrake application. Then move the shift lever into thegear you wish.
