1-39CAUTION:Newborn infants need complete support, including support for the head and neck. This is necessary because a newborn infant'sneck is weak and its head weighs so muchcompared with the rest of its body. In a crash, an infant in a rear-facing seat settles into therestraint, so the crash forces can be distributedacross the strongest part of an infant's body, theback and shoulders. Infants always should besecured in appropriate infant restraints.CAUTION:The body structure of a young child is quiteunlike that of an adult or older child, for whomthe safety belts are designed. A young child's hipbones are still so small that the vehicle's regularsafety belt may not remain low on the hip bones,as it should. Instead, it may settle up around thechild's abdomen. In a crash, the belt would applyforce on a body area that's unprotected by anybony structure. This alone could cause serious orfatal injuries. Young children always should besecured in appropriate child restraints.
