03 Your driving environment DRIVe Start/Stop*03* Option/accessory, for more information, see Introduction.127Quieter and cleanerEnvironmental care is one of Volvo Car Corpo-ration's core values and it influences all of ouroperations. This target-orientation has resultedin the DRIVe vehicle series whose conceptconsists of an interaction between several sep-arate energy-saving functions, all with thecommon purpose of reducing fuel consump-tion, which in turn contributes to reducedexhaust emissions.General information on Start/StopThe engine is switched off - it becomes quieter andcleaner....Some engine and gearbox combinations comefitted with a Start and Stop function whichengages in the event of e.g. stationary traffic orwaiting at traffic lights - the engine is thenswitched off temporarily and restarts automat-ically when the journey is due to continue.The Start/Stop function gives the driver theopportunity for a more active environmentallyconscious way of driving the car by means ofbeing able to allow the engine to stop auto-matically, whenever appropriate.Manual or AutomaticNote that there are differences in theStart/Stop function depending on whether thegearbox is manual or automatic.Function and operationStart/Stop On/Off.Illuminates briefly on activation and for textmessages.The engine is auto-stopped.The Start/Stop function is activatedautomatically when the engine isstarted with the key. The driver is alerted to thefunction by means of this symbol on the instru-ment panel illuminating briefly, the display textAuto Start-Stop ON is shown and the greenlamp for the On/Off button illuminates.All of the car's normal systems such as lighting,radio, etc. work as normal even with an enginethat has stopped automatically, except thatsome equipment may have the function tem-porarily reduced, e.g. the climate control sys-
