Grade Braking (Hydra-Maticfi6-SpeedAutomatic Transmission)The Grade Braking shift modes can be activated bypressing the button on the end of the shift control lever.While in Range Selection Mode, Grade Braking isdeactivated allowing the driver to select a desired rangeof gears.Grade Braking is only active while the Tow/Haul Mode isselected and you are not in the Range Selection Mode.See Tow/Haul Mode listed previously and AutomaticTransmission Operation on page 2-32 for moreinformation on the Range Selection Mode. Grade Brakingassists in maintaining desired vehicle speeds whendriving on downhill grades by automatically implementinga shift schedule that utilizes the engine and transmissionto slow the vehicle. This reduces wear on the brakingsystem and increases control of the vehicle. GradeBraking monitors vehicle speed, acceleration, enginetorque and brake pedal usage. Using this information,it detects when the truck is on a downhill grade and thedriver desires to slow the vehicle by pressing the brake.Also seeTowing a Trailer on page 4-50 for moreinformation.Cruise Grade Braking (Hydra-Maticfi6-Speed Automatic Transmission)Cruise Grade Braking assists when driving on a downhillgrade. It maintains vehicle speed by automaticallyimplementing a shift schedule that uses the engineand the transmission to slow the vehicle. Cruise GradeBraking operates while Cruise Control is engaged inTow/Haul mode to assist in maintaining vehicle speedunder loaded vehicle conditions. It utilizes vehicleacceleration and deviation from desired speed todetermine the correct gear for the operating condition.If vehicle speed is above the desired speed thetransmission will downshift to slow the vehicle.If vehicle speed is near or below desired speed thetrans will upshift, allowing vehicle speed to increase.While in the Range Select Mode (RSM) mode, CruiseGrade Braking is not available.SeeAutomatic Transmission Operation on page 2-32 .2-39
