The battery can be discharged at idle if the electricalloads are very high. This is true for all vehicles. This isbecause the generator (alternator) may not be spinningfast enough at idle to produce all the power that isneeded for very high electrical loads.A high electrical load occurs when several of thefollowing are on, such as: headlamps, high beams, foglamps, rear window defogger, climate control fan athigh speed, heated seats, engine cooling fans, trailerloads, and loads plugged into accessory power outlets.EPM works to prevent excessive discharge of thebattery. It does this by balancing the generators outputand the vehicles electrical needs. It can increaseengine idle speed to generate more power, wheneverneeded. It can temporarily reduce the power demands ofsome accessories.Normally, these actions occur in steps or levels, withoutbeing noticeable. In rare cases at the highest levels ofcorrective action, this action may be noticeable to thedriver. If so, a Driver Information Center (DIC) messagemight be displayed, such as BATTERY SAVER ACTIVE,BATTERY VOLTAGE LOW, or LOW BATTERY. If thismessage is displayed, it is recommended that the driverreduce the electrical loads as much as possible. See DICWarnings and Messages on page 3-64 .Battery Run-Down ProtectionThis feature shuts off the dome, and reading lampsif they are left on for more than 10 minutes whenthe ignition is off. This will keep the battery fromrunning down.Accessory Power Outlet(s)Accessory power outlets can be used to connectauxiliary electrical equipment, such as a cellulartelephone. There are two under the climate controls, one inside thecenter floor console, one on the rear of the centerfloor console and one accessory power outlet in the rearcargo area on the passenger side.To use an accessory power outlet, remove the protectivecap. When not in use, always cover the accessorypower outlet with the protective cap.The accessory power outlets are powered, even withthe ignition off. Continuing to use accessory poweroutlets while the ignition is in LOCK/OFF may cause thevehicles battery to run down.Notice:If electrical devices are left plugged into apower outlet, the battery may drain causing thevehicle not to start or damage to the battery. Thiswould not be covered by the warranty. Always unplugall electrical devices when turning off the vehicle.3-20
