Weight-Distributing Hitches and WeightCarrying HitchesA:Body to Ground DistanceB:Front of VehicleWhen using a weight-distributing hitch, the hitch mustbe adjusted so the distance (A) remains the same bothbefore and after coupling the trailer to the tow vehicle.If a step-bumper hitch will be used, the bumper could bedamaged in sharp turns. Make sure there is ample roomwhen turning to avoid contact between the trailer and thebumper.If the loaded trailer being pulled will weigh more than5,000 lbs (2 270 kg), be sure to use a properly mountedweight-distributing hitch and sway control of the propersize. This equipment is very important for proper vehicleloading and good handling when driving. Always use asway control if the trailer will weigh more than theselimits. Ask a hitch dealer about sway controls.Safety ChainsAlways attach chains between the vehicle and thetrailer. Cross the safety chains under the tongue of thetrailer to help prevent the tongue from contacting the roadif it becomes separated from the hitch. Instructions aboutsafety chains may be provided by the hitch manufactureror by the trailer manufacturer. If the trailer being towedweighs up to the vehicles trailer rating limit, safety chainsmay be attached to the attaching point on the hitchplatform. Always leave just enough slack so the rig canturn. Never allow safety chains to drag on the ground.4-57
