Do not connect positive (+) to negative ( −)oryouwill get a short that would damage the batteryand maybe other parts too. And do not connect thenegative (−) cable to the negative ( −) terminal onthe dead battery because this can cause sparks.6. Connect the redpositive (+) cable to thepositive (+) terminal ofthe vehicle with thedead battery. Use aremote positive (+)terminal if the vehiclehas one.7. Do not let the other end touch metal. Connect it tothe positive (+) terminal of the good battery. Use aremote positive (+) terminal if the vehicle has one.8. Now connect the black negative ( −) cable to thenegative (−) terminal of the good battery. Use aremote negative (−) terminal if the vehicle has one.Do not let the other end touch anything until thenext step. The other end of the negative ( −) cabledoes not go to the dead battery. It goes to aheavy, unpainted metal engine part or to the remotenegative (−) terminal on the vehicle with the deadbattery.9. Connect the other end of the negative ( −) cable tothe remote negative ( −) terminal, on the vehicle withthe dead battery.5-47
