Owner Checks and Services on page 6-10 tells whatshould be checked, when to check it, and what can easilybe done to help keep the vehicle in good condition.The proper replacement parts, fluids, and lubricants touse are listed inRecommended Fluids and Lubricantson page 6-13andMaintenance Replacement Parts onpage 6-15. When the vehicle is serviced, make surethese are used. All parts should be replaced and allnecessary repairs done before you or anyone elsedrives the vehicle. We recommend the use of genuineparts from your dealer/retailer.Scheduled MaintenanceWhen the CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON messagedisplays, service is required for the vehicle. Have thevehicle serviced as soon as possible within the next600 miles (1 000 km). It is possible that, if driving underthe best conditions, the engine oil life system may notindicate that vehicle service is necessary for over a year.However, the engine oil and filter must be changed atleast once a year and at this time the system must bereset. Your dealer/retailer has trained service technicianswho will perform this work using genuine parts and resetthe system.If the engine oil life system is ever reset accidentally,service the vehicle within 3,000 miles (5 000 km)since the last service. Remember to reset the oil lifesystem whenever the oil is changed. See Engine OilLife System on page 5-18 for information on the EngineOil Life System and resetting the system.When the CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON messageappears, certain services, checks, and inspectionsare required. Required services are described in thefollowing for Maintenance I and MaintenanceII.Generally, it is recommended that the first service beMaintenanceI, the second service be Maintenance II,and then alternate Maintenance Iand MaintenanceIIthereafter. However, in some cases, Maintenance IImay be required more often.MaintenanceI Use Maintenance Iif the CHANGEENGINE OIL SOON message displays within 10 monthssince the vehicle was purchased or Maintenance IIwasperformed.MaintenanceII Use Maintenance IIif theprevious service performed was Maintenance I.Always use Maintenance IIwhenever the messagedisplays 10 months or more since the last service orif the message has not come on at all for one year.6-4
