80Distance meteringDue to its large effective metering basis, the rangefinder on the three LEICA MP models isvery precise. The benefits of this are particularlynoticeable when using wide-angle lenses withtheir relative deep depth of field. The higher magnification in the case of the 0.85 viewfinderhas the effect of providing an even large meter-ing basis, further increasing the accuracy:The rangefinder metering field is visible as abright, sharply defined rectangle in the center ofthe viewfinder. If you keep the large viewfinderwindow (14) closed, only the activated bright-lineframe and this metering field remain visible. Thefocus can be set using either the superimposedimage or split image method:Superimposed image method (double image)In a portrait, for example, aim the metering fieldat the eye and turn the distance setting ring onthe lens until the contours in the metering fieldare brought into line. Then choose the subjectdetail.Split image methodWhen taking photographs of architecture, for ex-ample, aim the range finder metering field at thevertical edge or another clearly defined verticalline and turn the distance setting ring on the lensuntil the contours of the edge or line can be seen at the limits of the metering field with nomisalignment. Then choose the subject detail. In practice, there is often no clear distinctionbetween the two methods. The two criteria canbe used to great effect in combination.Mechanical metering x Viewfinder = Effectivebasis magnification metering basis(Distance between optical axes of viewfinderand the rangefinderviewing windows)Leica MP with = approx.0.72x viewfinder 69.25 mm x 0.72 49.9 mmLeica MP with = approx.0.85x viewfinder 69.25 mm x 0.85 58.9 mmLeica MP with = approx.0.58x viewfinder 69.25 mm x 0.58 40.2 mm
