5. Safe operating level is within the HOT cross hatchband on the dipstick. If the fluid level is not within theHOT band, and the transmission temperature isbetween 160F and 200F (71C and 93C), add ordrain fluid as necessary to bring the level into theHOT band. If the fluid level is low, add only enoughfluid to bring the level into the HOT band. It does nottake much fluid, generally less than one pint (0.5L).Do not overfill.6. If the fluid level is in the acceptable range, push thedipstick back in all the way, then flip the handledown to lock the dipstick in place.Consistency of ReadingsAlways check the fluid level at least twice using theprocedure described previously. Consistency (repeatablereadings) is important to maintaining proper fluid level. Ifreadings are still inconsistent, contact your dealer/retailer.Automatic Transmission Fluid(4-Speed Transmission)When to Check and Change AutomaticTransmission FluidA good time to check the automatic transmission fluidlevel is when the engine oil is changed.Change the fluid and filter at the intervals listed inAdditional Required Services on page 6-6 and be sureto use the transmission fluid listed in RecommendedFluids and Lubricants on page 6-13 .5-25
