09 Maintenance and service Oils and fluids09223Diesel engine.Dipstick, 4-cyl diesel engines.Filler pipe, engine oil.Checking the oil level in a new car is especiallyimportant before the first scheduled oil change.Volvo recommends checking the oil level every2 500 km. The most accurate measurementsare made on a cold engine before starting. Themeasurement will be inaccurate if taken imme-diately after the engine is switched off. Thedipstick will indicate that the level is too lowbecause the oil has not had time to flow downinto the oil sump.G020336The oil level must be within the area marked on thedipstick.Measurement and filling if required1. Ensure that the car is level. After switchingoff the engine it is important to wait5 minutes to allow the oil time to run backto the sump.2. Pull up and wipe the dipstick.3. Re-insert the dipstick.4. Pull it out and check the level.5.If the level is close to MIN then 0.5 litresshould be added. If the level is significantlybelow, then an additional amount isrequired.6. If required, check the level again, do it afterdriving a short distance. Then repeat steps1 - 4.WARNINGNever fill above the MAX mark. The levelshould never be above MAX or below MINas this could lead to engine damage.WARNINGDo not spill oil onto the hot exhaust manifolddue to the risk of fire.
