Things to remember when drivingBreaking-in periodGeneral informationMoving parts need to be broken in to adjust toeach other. The following instructions will help achieve along vehicle life and good economy.Engine and differentialAlways obey the official speed limits.Up to approx. 1,200 miles/2,000 kmDrive at varying engine and road speeds but donot exceed:▷4,500 rpm or 100 mph/160 km/h.Do not drive with full-throttle operation, and donot use the transmission's kickdown mode orLaunch Control. From 1,200 miles/2,000 kmThe engine and vehicle speed can gradually beincreased.TiresDue to technical factors associated with theirmanufacture, tires do not achieve their full trac‐tion potential until after an initial breaking-in pe‐riod.Drive conservatively for the first 200 miles/300 km.Brake systemBrakes require an initial break-in period of ap‐prox. 300 miles/500 km to achieve optimizedcontact and wear patterns between brake padsand rotors. Drive cautiously during this break-inperiod.ClutchThe clutch requires an initial break-in period ofapprox. 300 miles/500 km to function at an op‐timal level.During this break-in period, engage the clutchgently.Following part replacementThe same breaking in procedures should be ob‐served if any of the components mentionedabove have to be renewed in the course of thevehicle's operating life.General driving notesGround clearanceLimited ground clearanceNote that the Z4 sDrive35 has limitedground clearance, for instance when driving intounderground parking garages or over obstacles.Otherwise, the vehicle may be damaged.◀Closing the trunk lidDrive with the trunk lid closedOnly operate the vehicle with the trunk lidclosed; otherwise, exhaust fumes could enterthe passenger compartment.◀If the vehicle must be driven with the trunk lidopen:1. Close all windows.2.Greatly increase the air flow rate of the airconditioner or automatic climate control.Hot exhaust systemHot exhaust systemHigh temperatures are generated in theexhaust system.Do not remove the heat shields installed andnever apply undercoating to them. Make surethat flammable materials, e. g. hay, leaves, grass, etc. do not come in contact with the hot exhaustsystem during driving, while in idle positionmode, or when parked. Such contact could leadto a fire, and with it the risk of serious personalinjury as well as property damage.Seite 112112Online Edition for Part no. 01 41 2 604 231 - 03 10 500Things to remember when driving
