Transporting children safelyThe right place for childrenNoteChildren in the vehicleDo not leave children unattended in thevehicle; otherwise, they could endanger them‐selves and other persons, e.g., by opening thedoors.◀Children on the front passenger seatShould it ever be necessary to use a child re‐straint fixing system in the front passenger seat,make sure that the front, knee and side airbagson the front passenger side are deactivated. Au‐tomatic deactivation of front passenger airbags,refer to page 81 .Deactivating the front passenger airbagsIf a child restraint fixing system is used inthe front passenger seat, the front passengerairbags must be deactivated; otherwise, there isan increased risk of injury to the child when theairbags are triggered, even with a child restraintfixing system.◀Transport children in suitable child re‐straint fixing systemsOnly transport children younger than 13 yearsof age or shorter than 5 ft/150 cm in child re‐straint fixing systems suitable for the age,weight and size of the child; otherwise, there isan increased risk of injury in an accident.Children 13 years of age or older must wear asafety belt as soon as a suitable child restraintfixing system can no longer be used, due to theirage, weight and size.◀Installing child restraint fixingsystemsNotesManufacturer's information for child re‐straint fixing systemsTo select, mount and use child restraint fixingsystems, observe the information provided bythe system manufacturer; otherwise, the pro‐tective effect can be impaired.◀Standard child restraint systems are designedto be secured with a lap belt or with the lap-beltsection of a lap-and-shoulder belt. Incorrectly orimproperly installed child restraint systems canincrease the risk of injury to children. Always fol‐low the installation instructions for the systemwith the greatest care.In the front passenger seatCheck the deactivation of the passengerairbagAfter installing a child restraint fixing system onthe passenger seat, make sure that the front andside airbags on the passenger side have beendeactivated; otherwise, there is an increasedrisk of injury when the airbags are deployed.◀Seat positionBefore installing a child restraint fixing system,move the passenger seat as far back and ashigh * as possible to obtain the best possible po‐sition for the belt.Backrest width*1. Adjust the backrest width to its widest set‐ting, refer to page 43 .2.Install the child seat.Backrest width for the child seatBefore installing a child restraint fixingsystem in the front passenger seat, the backrestwidth must be opened completely.
