- 29 -First Steps: Basic Photography (A-REC)Note: The field of view of the viewfinder is approximately 85%of that of the lens. The viewfinder will therefore show an areaslightly smaller than that which will appear in the actual photo-graph. At distances of between 8 and 50 cm (3" - 20"), objectscentered in viewfinder will appear off-center in the actual photo-graph. Use the macro close-up field of view or the color LCDmonitor when framing subjects at a short distance from the lens.Note: The viewfinder is equipped with optical zoom linked to thelens. The viewfinder does not however show images framed indigital-zoom mode at the actual zoom ratio. Use the monitorwhen taking photographs with digital zoom.Step 7-Half-press the shutter-release buttonWhen the shutter-release button is pressed halfway, the camerawill determine the aperture and shutter speed best suited tocurrent lighting conditions and the distance to the subject.Once the focus operation is complete, the green autofocuslamp next to the viewfinder will glow steadily. These settingswill remain unchanged as long as the shutter button is half-pressed, even if the distance to the subject should change; this"focus lock" can be used to focus the camera on a subject notin the center of the final composition. The zoom ratio cannotbe changed while focus lock is in effect.Autofocus does not perform well when the image framedcontains little contrast, when the subject at the focus point ismuch brighter than the remainder of the image, when thesubject is poorly lit, when both distant and nearby objects are atthe focus point, or when the subject is moving rapidly. If thecamera is unable to determine the distance to the subject, theautofocus lamp will flash. In this case you should focus on anew subject at the same distance as the original subject andhalf-press the shutter-release button, then check to be sure thatthe autofocus lamp is glowing steadily. With the shutter releasebutton held half-way down, return the camera to its originalposition and press the button the rest of the way down.Note: When the monitor is on, the camera will record a photo-graph even when it is unable to determine the distance to thesubject. Check the monitor to be sure that the camera is in focusbefore pressing the shutter-release button all the way down.If the red flash lamp next to the viewfinder blinks when theshutter is half-pressed, the flash is charging and you will need towait for a few seconds before pressing the shutter button all theway down to record a photograph.
