- 42 -Advanced Settings (M-REC): Metering MethodMetering MethodIn determining autoexposure and shutter speed, the camerauses one of three light-metering methods: matrix, spot, orcenter-weighted. In matrix metering light is measured in sixty-four different areas of the frame and exposure adjusted to alevel that in most conditions best captures both brightly-lit andshaded portions of the image. Spot metering measures onlythe light at the center of the frame. Where there is contrastbetween different portions of the image, spot metering can beused to throw a subject into high relief. When spot metering isused, both focus and autoexposure settings will be locked whenthe shutter-release button is half-pressed. Center-weightedmetering measures the amount of light in the entire frame whileassigning the greatest weight to an area in the center of theframe equal to one quarter of the total. Use this setting whenyou would like autoexposure to be based on lighting conditionsin the center quarter of the frame.To choose a metering method, highlight METERING in theshooting menu and press the shutter-release button.
